Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary shot his way back into the spotlight by setting a new national record in the 10m air pistol event at the National Championship, which is underway at the Karni Singh Ranges in New Delhi, on Thursday.

Chaudhary scored an impressive 591 in the qualification round, surpassing his previous record of 589 set in Osijek, Croatia, in 2021.

Once considered a prime Olympic medal prospect, Chaudhary's career hit a roadblock after a disappointing Tokyo Olympics performance and a subsequent shoulder injury.

Determined to make a comeback, he adapted his technique and posture to overcome his injury.

Speaking to PTI about his performance, Chaudhary said, "I have been practicing consistently, either at the National Centre of Excellence or my home range. This score is a significant step toward reclaiming my spot in the national squad after two years."

Although he has no specific goals for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Chaudhary remains focused on his training and performance. “I have not set any goals. My focus has always been on practice and improving myself,” he stated.

Chaudhary, who trains under coach Samaresh Jung, continues to be a beacon of perseverance in Indian shooting.

As the final round approaches on January 5, his stellar qualification score has reignited hopes of a major international comeback.

Chaudhary's record-breaking performance has reaffirmed his determination to return to the international stage.
