Renowned coach and three-time Asiad gold medalist Jaspal Rana strongly criticized the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for its inconsistent Olympic selection policies, warning that the ongoing unpredictability could damage the future of India's most promising shooting talents.
Rana, who currently coaches double Olympic medalist shooter Manu Bhaker, expressed his concerns about the frequent changes in the selection criteria.
He argued that this lack of stability has already hurt several top shooters and risks sidelining more talents if not addressed.
"The federation’s selection policy changes every six months," said Rana, speaking against the confusion it creates for athletes to PTI.
He urged the sports ministry to enforce a consistent selection process, allowing athletes to focus on their performance without the anxiety of last-minute policy changes.
"Let them decide, whatever they decide, right or wrong, we are not discussing that, and then stick to it," Rana emphasized, suggesting that consistent policies could improve shooters' performances.
Rana highlighted the plight of several top shooters who have faded away despite being among the brightest Olympic prospects.
"Where is Saurabh Chaudhary? Where is Jitu Rai? Does anybody talk about them? No," Rana asked, referring to the shooters who once shone on the international stage but have since fallen out of the limelight.
He attributed their decline to the system's failure to support and nurture them after their initial success.
The NRAI had amended its selection criteria in 2021 following a disappointing Olympic outing in Tokyo, which saw India return without a medal in shooting for the second consecutive time.
The changes included a reduction in bonus points for quota winners and the reintroduction of selection trials after a long gap.
However, Rana criticized the lack of consistency even within the new system, pointing out that the number of shooters allowed to compete for Olympic berths had been unjustly restricted.
Rana also expressed concern over the treatment of established shooters like Bhaker, who, despite her success at the recent Paris Games, will have to fight for her place in the national squad upon returning from a brief break.
He also recounted the challenges he faced as Bhaker's coach during the Paris Olympics, where he had to coach from the spectators' gallery due to a lack of accreditation.
