ISSF World Cup Final: Sonam Maskar the only silver lining on a disappointing day for India
Maskar's silver in the women's 10m air rifle was India's only medal on a day when several Olympians fell short in the finals.
Indian shooter Sonam Maskar won a silver medal in the women's 10m air rifle category at the ISSF World Cup finals, in Delhi, on Tuesday.
Day one of the World Cup finals saw the finals of four events, and Maskar won India's first and only medal of the day.
Despite Olympic shooters participating in other categories for India, no other podium finish was attained by the hosts.
The 10m air rifle finals started with China's Yuting Huang firing away with tremendous consistency.
Sonam, except for a 9.9 in the first round, was exceptional right throughout the finals.
In the end, she prevailed in the shootout for second place, but couldn't get past Huang who shot a world record score of 254.5.
Maskar eventually finished with a score of 252.9.
In third place, Frenchwoman Oceanne Muller scored 231.1 points. India's Tilotamma Sen finished sixth in the finals with a score of 167.7.
Lowly finish from other Indians
Over at the men's 10m air rifle finals, Olympian Arjun Babuta could only manage a fifth-place finish, scoring 188.3.
China's Lihao Sheng won the gold medal in the event.
Meanwhile, Arjun Singh Cheema finished eighth in the men's 10m air pistol final in a rather disappointing performance, and India's Rhythm Sangwan and Surbhi Rao finished in fourth and fifth places respectively in the women's 10m air pistol final.
