Shooter Abhishek Verma clinched the gold medal at the 2019 ISSF World Cup in Beijing and subsequently earned a berth at the Tokyo Olympics next year.

This was India’s fifth entrant in the upcoming mega event in shooting and the second in the 10m air pistol category.

The first player to qualify for 10m bracket was Saurabh Chaudhury after he finished at the top at the Delhi World Cup. The 29-year old was participating in only his second World Cup, but he showed nerves of steel to overcome Russia’s Artem Chernousov and Korea’s Seungwoo Han who won the silver and bronze medals respectively. The Indian finished with a score of 242.7 while the second placed was shy of a couple of points, having scored 240.4. Verma had been pretty consistent in the qualifications also, having finished at the fourth position in the charts and was the only Indian to break through to the final. Shahzar Rizvi and Arjun Singh Cheema slipped from the competition having finished at the 32nd and 54th positions in the qualifiers.
Verma was primarily a hobby shooter, but he got a break just after three years of taking up the sport when he was selected for the Indian team. But his first major achievement was the Bronze medal at the Jakarta Asian Games last year. Country-mate Saurabh Chaudhury won the Gold medal in the same category. https://twitter.com/TheBridge_IN/status/1122022645183074304 Even though shooting has been India’s forte at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, the Olympics is going to be a stiff challenge for the shooters, but the country can expect at least a medal in Tokyo next year. The last time India won a medal in shooting at the Olympics was back in London when Gagan Narang secured a Bronze medal in the Air Rifle event and Vijay Kumar won a silver medal in the rapid-fire pistol category.
