Recently crowned World Champion and Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu got the Andhra Pradesh government’s assurance to set up a badminton academy in Visakhapatnam. 

The 24-year-old met the Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in the latter’s office in Vijayawada on Friday where she expressed her desire.

The Chief Minister responded positively, assuring Sindhu that the Government will allocate five acres of land for setting up the badminton academy.

In fact, Reddy has already directed the officials concerned to initiate the proceedings. Should the proposal materialise, it will be the first of its kind to come up in Andhra Pradesh post-state bifurcation.

Earlier in the day, the ace shuttler was received with warmed by the state government at the airport upon her arrival. Sindhu, along with her parents, Sports Minister Muthamsetty Srinivas and other sports officials, met the Chief Minister.

After the meeting, Sindhu went on to express her gratitude towards the state government and thanked the Chief Minister and his government for responding positively to her request.

Later, addressing the media, Sindhu said that the Chief Minister congratulated her and wished her to do well in the future. She added:

He not only promised all support but also promised to provide five acres of land and needed support.

When asked about her nomination for the prestigious Padma Bhusan award, she said, "It is not yet confirmed. If I get the award, It will definitely a proud movement for me."

Minister for Sports M Srinivas Rao was quoted saying, “We all wish her to do well and win the gold medal in the ensuing Olympics. On our part, we extend every possible support to her.”

Later on in the day, Sindhu had a meeting with the Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan at Raj Bhavan, where she was felicitated.
