This 16th of March, Mary Kom will officially have her academy inaugurated in Imphal. The man to do the honours is none other than Narendra Modi. The inauguration of the Mary Kom Regional Boxing Academy promises to be a star-studded affair as it will be attended by the likes of Olympic medallists like Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar. The academy's land was granted by the Manipur government five years back and the expense relating to construction was funded by National Sports Development Fund (NSDF). Right now, the Mary Kom Boxing Academy is home to around 45 boxers, twenty of them being young girls. The academy is situated at the foothills of Langol Manipur's Imphal West district, approximately 10km away from the capital. The academy is spread over 3.3 acres of land In the Press Release, the Prime Minister was thanked profusely for deciding to be a part of this endeavour. The state government was also acknowledged for their efforts to promote sports and boxing. 'The foundation is grateful to both central and state government for establishment of these sports facilities after many years of struggle since its inception in 2006,' it read. It continued, "The foundation expresses their gratitude to PMO for making (it) to the event and formally handover the buildings to the foundation for the promotion of boxing sports."
Magnificent Mary,
as the International Boxing Association (AIBA) christened her a few years ago as a mark of respect for her remarkable career was also recently given a position in the Rajya Sabha. Also read: Looking back on 2017: Mary Kom's Asian Boxing Championship win In the past few months, the inclusion of athletes in the ministry has seen quite a few initiations to make the country's sporting success better. Only yesterday, Nita Ambani announced plans of establishing a university to promote research facilities in sports. The 35 year old Boxer is India's only female Olympic medallist in boxing and this academy is surely going to be her attempt to make sure she is definitely not the last.
