Para-badminton is one of the newest sports of the Paralympic Games, making its debut at the previous edition of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

This sport will be returning at the Paris Paralympics with an increase in the number of medal events. There will be sixteen medal events in Paris in comparison to the 14 in Tokyo.

Also, to impose gender equality at the games, the IPC has decided to use all 12 singles events (6 men, 6 Women) with one each event in men's and women's doubles and two mixed doubles events.

China won the first edition of Para-badminton at these Games, having won 10 medals. They were closely followed by Japan with 9 and Indoesia with six medals.

On the other hand, India finished in fourth position with 4 medals including 2 gold medals. This time India is sending a 13-member contingent to Paris in this sport which is almost double in comparison to Tokyo (7).

Medal Chances

Men's Singles: India has won four medals in Para-badminton at the Paralympics and all of them have come in the men's singles category. This category will be the favorites again for India to medal in Paris.

India has always been a dominant force in the men's singles SL3 category and this time also they can win two medals in this category as both Nitesh Kumar and Manoj Sarkar will be eying for the medals.

On the other hand, the reigning world champions, Suhas Yathiraj (MS SL4), and Krishna Nagar (MS SH6) will be the ones who can bring home the gold medals. However, they will face tough competition in the knockout rounds.

Women's Singles: India has yet to win a medal in the women's singles category at the Paralympic Games but this time in Paris, few contenders are there who can win India's first ever medal in this category.

One of the biggest medal hopes in the women's category is, Thulasimathi Murugesan (WS SU5), she entered the tournament as the world number one after heroics last year including a gold medal at the Asian Para Games.

Another SU5 shuttler Manisha Ramadass, can also surprise everyone with a medal in this category. On the other hand, Manasi Joshi (SL3) and Nithya Sre (SH6) will have a tough task in hand in the search for a medal.
