Paralympics 2024 Athletics: Nishad wins Silver, Preethi secure bronze
Nishad Kumar wins Silver in men's high jump at Paris Paralympics 2024, while Preethi Pal secured two bronze medals.
It turned out to be a super-Sunday in the track and field for India.
Indian athletes appeared in three finals on Sunday night at 2024 Paralympics and two of them walked away with medals.
The first medal came courtesy Preethi Pal in the Women’s 200m T35 final.
Preethi put in a superlative sprint and registered a personal best of 30.01s to finish marginally behind China’s Quianqian (29.09s) and Xia Zhou (28.15s).
The medal meant double delight for Preethi as she had previously bagged a bronze in the 100m as well.
After couple of hours, Nishad Kumar has won a Silver medal in the men's high jump at the Paris Paralympics 2024, marking his second Paralympic medal and India's seventh in the high jump event, on Sunday.
Nishad jumped 2.04 meters to secure second place on Sunday, September 1.
In the same event, fellow Indian athlete Ram Pal finished in seventh place with a jump of 1.95 meters, matching his personal best.
The event was dominated by the USA's Roderick Townsend-Roberts, who claimed the gold with a jump of 2.08 meters.
Nishad and Roderick were the only athletes to clear the 2.00-meter mark.
Both made attempts at 2.08 meters, but while Roderick succeeded on his second try to win the gold, Nishad missed his chance, earning him the silver.
With this Nishad became the youngest to win back-to-back Paralympics medals.

2. Nishad Kumar (India) - 2.04m
3. Georgii Margiev (Neutral) - 2.00m
India’s Ram Pal was also in the fray in the high jump and he finished 7th with a personal best of 1.95m.
The third India who made a final appearance on Sunday was Ravi Rangoli in the Men’s shot put F40 final.
Ravi came flying out of the blocks and kept improving his throw with the first three efforts but unfortunately ran out of steam thereafter. In the end, despite a personal best effort of 10.63m, Ravi finished 5th and out of the medals.
When the dust settled, India walked away with a silver and a bronze, undoubtedly superlative efforts, courtesy Nishad Kumar and Preethi Pal.
