In an exceptional turn of events at the Paris Paralympics 2024, India's Nihal Singh found himself eliminated from the Mixed 25m Pistol SH1 Qualifications, despite scoring a respectable 569 points.

This seemingly good score, however, placed him in a three-way tie for the 9th position, setting the stage for a tie-breaker that would ultimately seal his fate.

The tie-breaker in shooting comes down to the number of times a shooter hits the elusive inner 10-point ring, also known as the "x."

In this instance, Nihal's 7x paled in comparison to China's Yang Chao's 15x and France's Gaelle Edon's 14x.

This crucial difference in the x-count meant that despite having the same overall score, Nihal was ranked 10th and thus missed the cut for the finals.

Nihal's 60 shots at the Qualification, One can count the 7 shots he had in the inner circle.

This rule emphasizes the importance of precision and consistency in Paralympic shooting.

It's not just about hitting the target but hitting the center of the target. This adds an extra layer of challenge to the sport, ensuring that only the most skilled shooters progress.

The rule book for Paralympics shooting, specifically, Rule 6.14.2.1 addresses tie-breaks in qualification rounds, and Rule 7.10.2.1 covers tie-breaks in finals.

Both rules state that in the event of a tie, the athlete with the higher number of inner tens (x's) will be ranked higher

Nihal's experience serves as a stark reminder of the fine margins that can decide victory or defeat in Paralympic shooting.

India has won a total of four medals in Para Shooting at the 2024 Paris Paralympics with Avani Lekhara gold, Manish winning silver, and Mona and Rubina clinching bronze medal.
