Paralympics 2024: Deepthi Jeevanji wins bronze in women's 400m T20

Deepthi Jeevanji won India's third medal in track events at the Paralympics with a bronze medal in women's 400m T20 event.

India won the third medal in the track events as Deepthi Jeevanji won the bronze medal in the women's 400m T20 race at the 2024 Paralympics on Tuesday,

The reigning world champion Jeevanji clocked 55.82s in the women's 400m final to clinch the bronze medal. The T20 category in the Paralympics is for track and field athletes with intellectual impairments.

It was a brilliant race with the Ukranian runner Yuliia Shuliar stunning both world record holder and world champion. Shuliar clocked a personal of 55.16s to clinch the gold medal defeating world record holder Aysel Onder and world champion Deepthi Jeevanji.

With Deepthi's medal, India has won a total of three medals in the track events and five medals overall in the Para-Athletics. Earlier, Preethi Pal won two bronze in women's 100m and 200m T35 events while Sumit Antil broke the Paralympic record to win the men's javelin F64 gold medal.

Yogesh Kathuniya won the silver medal in the men's discus throw F56 making him a double Paralympic medalist.

Bhagyashri finishes fifth

In the women's shotput F34 event, India's opening ceremony flagbearer Bhagyashri Jadhav finished fifth with a best throw of 7.28m.

The competition was high in the event with Chinese athlete Liujan Zou winning the gold with the best throw of 9.14m while Lucyna Kornobys of Poland won the silver medal with 8.33m.

The bronze medal went to Saida Amoudi of Morocco with 7.80m.
