Asia-Pacific Deaf Games 2024: Ambika and Yashaswi open India's account
Ambika Masagi and Yashaswi Kudmanu won the silver and bronze medals in the women's Blitz Chess event, winning India's first medals.
India's Ambika Masagi and Yashaswi Kudmanu opened India's medal tally at the 10th Asia-Pacific Deaf Games, in the Women's Blitz Chess event, in Kuala Lumpur, on Monday.
Ambika won the silver medal with a score of 8/11, and Yashaswi won the bronze medal with a score of 8.5/11.
The Asia Pacific Deaf Games is a multi-sport event for the deaf, established in 1984, and is held every four years in the Asia Pacific region.
The 10th Asia Pacific Deaf Games have made an exciting return after a 9-year hiatus, featuring 7 sporting disciplines in badminton, athletics, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, chess, and wrestling.
This tournament, starting today and ending on December 8, is seen as the precursor to the upcoming 2025 Deaflympics, scheduled to be held in Japan.
A 68-member Indian team has been sent to the Asia-Pacific Deaf Games, considered to be on par with the Asian Games for individuals with speech and hearing impairment.
The event was last held in 2015 in Taiwan, where India won three gold medals and two silver medals.
Due to political tensions in Hong Kong, the 2019 edition of the event was called off and this edition was initially scheduled to be held in Iran, but due to civil and political unrest, the event got shifted to Malaysia's capital.
