Commonwealth Games 2026: All you need to know about Mohammed Basil

Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath is one among India's promising young para athletes, who is set to make his debut at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 21-year-old sprinter currently ranks second in the world this year in the men’s 100m T47 category, the event in which he will compete in Scotland.

Early days

Hailing from Veliyancode in Malappuram, Kerala, Basil was born without his right arm, but he rose above the adversities and dived into the world of sports.

He first learned about para athletics during Grade 10 at school and is currently training at the SAI LNCPE in Thiruvananthapuram while pursuing his college studies.

He first came into the limelight last year, winning the National Championships in Chennai in the men's 100m T47 Category with a time of 10.96s.

He followed it with the gold medal at the Khelo India Para Games in New Delhi and then another gold medal on his international debut at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix.

Road to Glasgow

Following a strong breakthrough year, Basil entered 2026 with the goal of further improvement and qualification for the year’s major international events.

However, he had a poor start to the year, suffering a Did Not Finish (DNF) at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in New Delhi and could only manage a second-place finish at the National Championships with a sub-par 11.02s.

But, he bounced back strongly at the final Commonwealth Games qualifier in Bengaluru, producing an Asian Record time with a massive personal best of 10.63s.

Basil claimed gold in the combined T46-47 final, finishing ahead of Dilip Gavit (10.64s/T46), and successfully booked his ticket to Glasgow alongside Gavit.

Now, he is set to make his major international debut, and if he carries forward his recent momentum, he might win the gold medal in the combined 100m T45-47 final on 29th July.
