Yesterday, reports emerged that in addition to South African cricket legend Herschelle Gibbs, former Indian seamer Manoj Prabhakar has also submitted his name for consideration for the position of the coach of the Indian Women's Cricket team. PTI reported that should the names be shortlisted, the final decisions and interviews would lie in the hands of Prabhakar's former teammate Kapil Dev with whom he shares a problematic past. The latest addition in the very drawn out and very public saga involving the Indian Women's Cricket team had seen T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana bat for former coach Ramesh Powar despite his contract coming to an end with the recent Women's World T20. The reasoning they gave was that such frequent changes would not prove to be good for the team in the long run as it did not give them a chance to settle in on a particular strategy. Gibbs announced his candidature on Twitter while Prabhakar confirmed the same in an interview to PTI. The latter refused to speak about the troubled airs between him and Kapil Dev the controversies of which began right when scandalous incidents of match-fixing started plaguing Indian cricket in the year 2000. https://twitter.com/hershybru/status/1071630448806256640?s=21 "Yes, I have applied for the chief coach's post. It would be an honour to serve the country's national cricket team in any capacity," Prabhakar told PTI. Apart from Kapil Dev, the other members of the final review committee include Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy. "There is so much talent in the women's game and I think I have the experience to help the likes of Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Smriti Mandhana," Prabhakar added. The last date for the submission of names for consideration has been set at December 14 by the BCCI but before that, concerns have been raised over the involvement of both Gibbs and Prabhakar in match-fixing scandals. However, PTI quoted a BCCI official as saying, "If the committee after due diligence finds their candidature suitable, they will be shortlisted."
