‘India Targets Top-5 Olympic Medal Ranking by 2047’: Mandaviya

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced on Friday that India has set an ambitious goal to be among the top five Olympic medal-winning nations by 2047, marking 100 years of its independence.

This target aligns with the country’s broader vision to enhance its global sporting presence.

Addressing the media after participating in the 10th Convocation of the Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Gwalior, the Youth Affairs and Sports Minister emphasized the crucial role of world-class coaches and training facilities in achieving this milestone.

“The country needs a talent pool of world-level coaches and training, and LNIPE in Gwalior is playing a major role in it,” Mandaviya said.

He also highlighted India’s aspirations for the 2036 Olympics, which the country aims to host.

“When India hosts the Olympics in 2036, it should rank among the top 10 nations in sports,” he said. “And by 2047, when we celebrate 100 years of independence, the country should be among the top five.”

Mandaviya stressed the importance of identifying and nurturing sporting talent across the nation, ensuring that promising athletes are given the right opportunities.

He pointed to the efforts being made at LNIPE, where students receive specialized training, stating, “Good coaches are being groomed here through diploma, graduation, post-graduation, and PhD programs, and they will play a major role in nurturing the next generation of athletes.”

He also inaugurated a 400-bed hostel and a digital studio during his visit. The convocation saw 121 students receiving their degrees.

In his closing remarks, Mandaviya urged physical education teachers to adopt a “nation first” mindset, contributing to India’s goal of becoming a top sporting nation by 2047.
