Sharath Kamal holds the distinction of winning India's first gold at Commonwealth Games in Table Tennis. The historic feat came on this day in 2006 in Melbourne.

In that games, Indian returned with a haul of 22 golds, 17 silver medals and 11 bronze making a total of 50 medals.

Achanta Sharath Kamal had won gold in men's singles category and became the first one to fetch gold of table tennis in India. The paddler shared his fond memories on social media and said, "Won India’s first gold in Table Tennis at the Commonwealth Games on this day in 2006. Still remember how I couldn’t sleep the night before the finals, and all the anxiety. A very happy memory to look back on, now.''

In Melbourne, he beat crowd favourite Australian William Henzell in the final and created history. It has been 14 years when this happened, a lot has changed in the Indian table tennis fraternity with the coming of younger player but the influence of Sharath remains unparalleled.

Sharath's most recent title came at the Oman Open earlier this month which was also very special for him as it came after 10 years that he had won an open title. He won Egypt open in 2010 and it took him 10 more year of hard work and passion to get the better of top-seeded Marcos Freitas of Portugal 6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 3-11, 17-15 in the final of the the ITTF Challenger Plus Oman Open.
