Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj, on Monday, was conferred with Ekalavya award by the Karnataka government. The 19-year-old swimmer from Bengaluru took to Twitter to share the honour with his followers.

One of India's elite swimmers, Srihari has recently got back into pool following a prolonged gap imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will have to surmount a crucial challenge to confirm a berth in next year’s Tokyo Olympics. He has already achieved the second-level Olympic qualifying mark—B standard or Olympic Selection Time. He has made the B grade clocking 54.69 secs in 100m backstroke (53.85 secs is the A mark). But it only keeps him on course if the total quota of swimmers is not reached by the end of the qualification period.

No Indian swimmer has till date achieved the A standard, or Olympic Qualification Time to ensure an automatic berth to line up at the Olympic pool next year.

In 2019, he represented India at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. In 2017, he competed in short course swimming at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

In 2018, he represented India at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia. A few months later, he competed at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia. In the same year, he also competed in the boys' 50 metre backstroke, boys' 100 metre backstroke and boys' 200 metre backstroke events at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
