Squash player Mahesh Mangaonkar becomes the first Indian sportsperson to return to action as sporting activities resumes in Helsinki, Finland following the relaxation of lockdown forced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 26-year-old Indian returned to court and is working with the Finland Squash Federation and is one of the first squash professional players to be back in action sporting action and train with the Finns.

Mangaonkar, ranked 49th in the world on the Professional Squash Association list, plays in the European club leagues and shifted base from The Hague (Netherlands) to Helsinki after accepting the Finland offer.

The World Squash Federation (WSF) had announced recommendations, on May 20, for the safety of players in the post-pandemic phase. They are strictly abiding by the rules of sanitising, social distancing.

In many European countries, restrictions on movement has been eased to infuse confidence among the public and get the economy back on rails. Professional sport, already hurt by freeze on major competitions and gradually returning to competitive league in empty stadiums, should be ready for further stoppages in future.
