Over the years, India has struggled to produce a good bunch of greco-roman wrestler. Freestyle Wrestling has always seen impressive results but greco-roman has never been one of the stronger areas of India. But finally after years of wait, we have got a wrestler who is now a part of the best in the world; Sunil Kumar has entered the top 4 in the world rankings.

It won’t be wrong to say that he is the most improved wrestler in last 10 months and the currents ranking are here to prove it.

Kumar is the only Indian to round up in the top four at 87kg United World Wrestlings ranking. In the start of the year, he was ranked 33 in the world and went on to take a massive 29 position leap to now ranking at number 4. This came after winning gold at the Asian Championships and silver at Rome Ranking Series.

He is yet to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics but given the form and the ranking, he might soon when events start to take place again. Higher ranking will also mean that he will be part of top seeded which will keep the tougher opponents at bay. If he manages to do so, he will be the biggest medal hope for India in greco-roman ever.

“The Asian Qualifiers are easier compared to the Worlds Qualifiers. There are more wrestlers in worlds which make the competition tougher,” he said while speaking to Wrestling TV.

Sunil will have to finish in the top two in the 87kg weight class to confirm India a place in the Olympics. United World Wrestling (UWW) is yet to announced the new dates for the qualifiers.
