India's Manas Dhamne has become the new World No. 1 in the latest Under-14 UTR tennis Rankings. Two years ago, the lad from Pune had won the U-12 Boys Singles at the Eddie Herr Tennis Tournament in Florida. Winning this tournament made him the first-ever Indian to do so in a Grand Slam that is highly rated amongst all the junior tennis tournaments in the world with previous winners including Maria Sharapova, Andy Roddick, Jelena Jankovic etc.

Fast forward to 2021 and Manas has continued his promising career by claiming the World No. 1 rank in the Under 14 Boys category — a truly memorable moment not just for him but for Indian sports fans in general.

Dhamne trains at the Adhar Poonawala Academy in Pune and has previously won the Les Petits Asia playoffs as well. His coach in the Junior Fed Cup, Namita Bal has previously described him by saying “he is smart and has terrific ball sense. He has a lot of maturity for his age in the way he puts the points together and in finding a way to win”. All these characteristics seemed to have played out well in the short career of Manas who has had a phenomenal debut at the ITF Junior tour.

He has been ranked over players in his category such as Jacob Olar, Max Ested and Frederico Cina and is the only Asian player in the top 10. Being a 13-year-old, there will be high hopes from the tennis fraternity in India who will be hoping to see him amongst the top ranked players in the next decade or so.
