2019 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championship: Jeremy Lalrinnunga rewrites own youth World Record
16-year-old weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga (67kg) bagged the gold medal with a new youth World and Asian record lift of 299kg at the ongoing Asian Junior & Youth Weightlifting Championship being held in Pyongyang, DPR Korea.
While Jeremy finished on top of the podium, Riazki Juniansyah of Indonesia finished second with a total lift of 287kg, a good 12kg off the Youth Olympic gold medallist's mark. Uzbekistan's Olimov Khojiakbar finished third after lifting a total of 273kg.
The Asian Junior Championships, where lifters aged between 15 and 20 compete, also serve as a Golden Level Qualification Event for Tokyo 2020. In this year's Junior competition, a total of 126 weightlifters (53 women, 73 men) took part.
With Tuesday's feat, the Indian youngster thus bettered his own record of 297kg which he had achieved in Ningbo at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in April 2019. Previously, in an interview with The Bridge, Jeremy had stated that he was aiming to lift higher than 310kg in the days to come to make the Olympic cut.
It does seem that he is heading in the right direction as the days to Tokyo 2020 draws closer. If not 2020, Jeremy will definitely be a big medal prospect at the 2024 Paris Games, the official logo of which was unveiled yesterday.
