Mizoram is likely to host National games in 2024 as the local media reported quoting the state’s sports minister, Robert Romawia Royte.
Royte said that a proposal to host the XXXXI National Games in 2024 was submitted by chief minister Zoramthanga, who is now in the national capital, to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general, Rajeev Mehta on Friday as per the reports by Newmai News Network.
The report further said that Mehta had told the CM that Mizoram greatly deserves to host the national games as it is a football loving state.
“Mehta promised us to make massive effort to allow Mizoram host the national game, in collaboration with the Centre," Royte was quoted in the report.
Zoramthanga was accompanied by Royte and state chief secretary, Lalnunmawia Chuaungo.
Royte then said that the hosting of National Games by Mizoram is long overdue as the state's performance in various sports disciplines is excellent. “Once a decision to host National Games 2024 is made, great leap will happen in various sports disciplines," Royte said.
He also said officials of IOA will soon visit the state to study the feasibility. Royte appealed to all sports loving states to support Mizoram to host National Games in 2024.
Thanking the chief minister for taking the initiative, Royate said if materialised, it will be a milestone in the history of Mizoram.
Mizoram is one of the most football loving states in the country. The state has produced a host of talented footballers including players like Jeje Lalpekhlua. There are as many as 20 players are playing in the ISL and 35 footballers are representing some of the top teams in the I League.
Prior to this, Manipur and Assam from the northeast region have hosted the national games. In 2022, Meghalaya will host the game.
