The Tata Mumbai Marathon that was held today suddenly took a turn for the worse as a 64-year old man passed away during the event, with three others suffering a cardiac arrest. According to reports, Gajanan Maljalkar, who was enlisted in the marathon as a senior citizen, collapsed after completing 4km. He was rushed to the Bombay Hospital and was declared brought dead.

Maljalkar was not the only casualty, however. While there were no other deaths that were reported, three others who took part in the Mumbai Marathon suffered cardiac arrests and were admitted to the Bombay Hospital. One of them is currently undergoing angioplasty.

The half marathon started at 5.15 am, with the 10k run beginning at 6.30 am. Over 55,000 people took part in the 17th edition of the Mumbai Marathon, with amateurs, enthusiasts and professional runners all out in the financial capital to create their own personal record. The half marathon was flagged off by Maharashtra tourism minister Aaditya Thackeray. Rahul Bose and Milind Soman took part in the event as well as runners.

The 10k run started from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST), with the runners passing the Bandra-Worli sea link, the Marine Drive, the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Haji Ali and Peddar Road on the way.

In the absence of Gopi T and Nitendra Singh Rawat, Srinu Bugatha emerged as the fastest Indian male in the event, clocking 1:18:45 to add to the Tata Steel 25km marathon that he had won last year. Kenya's Cosmos Lagat along with last year's champion Worknesh Alemu of Ethiopia was seen as well, along with Sudha Singh from India.

According to reports, the event saw 55,322 registrations,more than 19% from 2019 when 46,414 people had registered. There was an increase in women participation by 35%, with 15,890 women registering for the Mumbai Marathon in 2019, as compared to the 11,815 that had registered last year.
