The young Jehan Daruvala earned his maiden podium finish in Formula 2 as he finished third during the Bahrain Grand Prix support race on Saturday. The 22 year old Indian beat championship leader Mick Schumacher on his way to the podium finish.

Hailing from the city of Mumbai, Daruvala started the race eighth on the grid and rose two places to sixth for a few laps before he lost two places and was forced off the circuit during the fifth of the total 32 laps. This led to a aloss in speed and the Indian stayed tenth for few more laps before pitting for a change in tyres.

Daruvala seemed down and out when he emerged out of the pit at eighteenth position but soon reached the sixth position at the end of the 19th lap. The Indian quickly overtook the Russian Robert Schwartzman to take up the fifth position before Mick Schumacher had to take his mandatory pit stop.

By the time Schumacher emerged back from the pit, the German was trailing the Indian who was now at the third position. From then on it was a cat and mouse chase between the two, but Daruvala prevailed despite of the new tyres and Drag Reduction System (DRS) possessed by Schumacher.

In spite of having a great disadvantage, Daruvala managed to draw some mistakes from Schumacher which helped the Indian to cross the finish line 0.894 seconds before the German to earn his first podium finish.

The youngster took to twitter to express his happiness and tweeted, “P3 and my first podium in @fifa2championship…Race was exciting, had great fun battling at the end with @mickschumacher…Big thanks to @carlinracing…Now looking forward to tomorrow @FIA_F2 @CarlinRacing @pap_sc @winway.”
