Indian wrestlers continue their superb show at the Dan Kolov-Nikola Petrov wrestling in Ruse, Bulgaria. The tournament is a ranking tournament and so far, India has had massive reason to be proud of given that star grappler Bajrang Punia yesterday scored a decisive 12-3 win to beat Jordan Oliver and take the Gold in the 65kg Freestyle category. Post the victory, he dedicated his medal to Wing Commander Abhinandan who was returned to India after being in Pakistani custody at the peak of tensions between the two nations. https://twitter.com/wrestling/status/1101932205436227584 The tournament being a part of the Ranking Series by the United World Wrestling saw Bajrang Punia claim maximum ranking points from the event after the massive win. It also ensured that India return with a Gold medal from the tournament. This win was also the 10th medal for Bajrang Punia in as many tournaments since the last time he competed and failed to register a posium finish- the 2017 World Championships in Paris.
Earlier, wrestler Sandeep Tomar bagged a silver in the 61kg weight category. He had lost against Nurislam Sanayev of Kazakhstan. India's female wrestlers have grabbed the spotlight as well with their dominating performances. Pooja Dhanda won Gold in the 59kg category which Rio Olympics 2016 Bronze medalist Sakshi Malik settled for a Silver in the 65kg category. She lost to Henna Johansson of Sweden in the 65kg final. All eyes, however, are on Vinesh Phogat who would well grab the 53kg Gold medal later this Sunday. Her form in the tournament has been impressive so far- even more so when one realises that she is not competing in her preferred weight category of 50kg. She defeated USA wrestler Sarah Hildebrandt in the semifinals in spectacular fashion even finishing a pin over her opponent. https://twitter.com/wrestling/status/1101932205436227584 Vinesh Phogat will be facing Qianyu Pang of China in the 53kg finals later today. The wrestler from Haryana has had an amazing series of results since her comeback to the mat after a horrific injury which cut her Rio 2016 journey short.
