In a massive, massive blow to India's chances at the Wrestling World Championships, Vinesh Phogat has been ruled out from participating in the elite event after an elbow injury sustained during training. Vinesh Phogat has been on a fantastic run in the recent past after an effortless gold in the Commonwealth Games which she followed up with a dominant performance in the Asiad to bag the second consecutive gold for her. One of the smaller victories for Vinesh at the Asian Games was her first round victory over Chinese wrestlers Sun Yanan against whom she was injured in the 2016 Olympics. https://twitter.com/Phogat_Vinesh/status/1043899116332470273 https://twitter.com/Phogat_Vinesh/status/1043899876411666442 A Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) official was quoted by PTI as saying that, ""It is a big setback for us. During sparring, she injured her elbow and the MRI scans done in Mumbai revealed the ligaments are torn. It will be very risky to compete in the Worlds." Vinesh Phogat had been exempted from trials for the World Championships keeping in mind her fantastic lead up to the tournament. She was supposed to compete in the 50kg category and had been touted as a sure shot chance for India at a medal which would have been a fantastic prospect for sure. However, with her chances at participation dashed, the WFI is now looking at alternatives who would be representing India in the weight category Vinesh was supposed to. But even that is posing to be a little problem because the second best grappler in the 50kg category has been selected to participate in the 53kg category and it is none other than young Ritu Phogat. With both Ritu and Vinesh ruled out of 50kg, the question of who the replacement will be still remains. Interestingly, Vinesh's injury is just one bad event which happened on the back of yet another controversy which affected the lead upto the World Championships. Haryana's Pinki, the only female Gold medalist at the recent Yasar Dogu International exposure tour was supposed to get a direct qualification but she was asked to appear for trails via Ritu Phogat after her Asiad performance proved to be less than satisfactory. Pinki refused and Ritu was given a direct qualification. The World Championship will be held in Budapest from October 20-28.
