A new state-of-the-art sports university is set to operationalise from September 1 in the state of Punjab, with the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh giving clearance for the newly-named Punjab Sports University in Patiala. The name of the university was, however, approved in the high-level meeting of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the university, chaired by Captain Amarinder. The admissions are slated to begin in the month of September. Punjab is all set to open a new sports university in Patiala, starting from September 1. The course curriculum, which had already been finalised, will focus on the development of knowledge and skills in the fields of physical education and sports science, sports technology and high-performance training. It will provide high-quality coaching facilities and support for budding athletes. The launch of an university dedicated solely to sports can be seen as a fruitful measure to raise innovative state-wide awareness programme in order to attract and capture talent at an early age for nurturance into world-class players. The University will be located on the 97 acres of land adjacent to the Rajiv Gandhi National Law University. The decision to set up the sports university was announced by Captain Amarinder in a speech to the assembly on June 19, 2017. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh chairs a high level meeting of the steering committee to discuss about the new sporting venture. Subsequently, under the chairmanship of Olympian and International Olympic Committee member Randhir Singh, a steering committee had been set up to finalise the modalities to establish this sports educational institute of international eminence.
