As the entire country waits with bated breath watching the results of the Assembly Elections ongoing in a number of states in the country. The results have come as surprises for some and as shocks for many. One thing that has remained constant is the candidature of athlete Krishna Poonia who is in the running for the second time from Sadulpur assembly seat in Churu as a Congress candidate. She was competing against the sitting BSP MLA and a former BJP MP from the area. And this time, on her second attempt, she won the seat. Speaking to Economic Times ahead of this election, Poonia's husband Virendar Poonia- international athlete and Dronacharya Awardee had said,
“Both Congress and BJP had approached her in 2013 but we chose Congress. Then we were new to politics and got only 18 days to campaign after she got the ticket. New people even lose their deposit in this seat,” he had said. She was with a margin of 646 votes in the first round of counting. This is how the results fared at the end. In 2010, Poonia won the women's discus final at the Delhi Commonwealth Games winning the gold medal with a throw of 61.51 metres. The Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 2011. She is the first Indian woman athlete to win the Gold Medal. Poonia isn't the only personality related to Indian sports who scored a victory. The owner of Aizawl FC Robert Royte also scored a landslide representing Mizoram National Front as he clinched his Vidhan Sabha seat. https://twitter.com/TheBridge_IN/status/1072478800473190400
