734 players shortlisted for the Khelo India scholarship scheme

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) announced the names 734 players who are going to be awarded a scholarship programme under the Khelo India Talent Identification Programme scheme. SAI’s High Powered Committee (HPC) shortlisted the candidates after a talent identification committee consisting of Arjuna Awardee and Dronacharya Awardees pooled a list of beneficiaries. A total of 385 boys and 349 girls have made a cut to the list that will be benefitted from the scheme. The major incentives from the programme will be an annual stipend and training support from Khelo India-accredited academies which includes 21 non-SAI academies approved by the HPC.

The yearly stipend is reportedly a massive Rs. 1.2 Lakhs...

...which will be disseminated quarterly which is supposed to cater to meet their out-of-pocket expenses, treating injuries and local travel for themselves and their parents/family members. Meanwhile, in the technical part, the academies have been bestowed with the responsibilities to look after the training, boarding and tournament expenses of the athletes to provide them access to quality training without having to travel long distances. In the review, the performance of the athletes as well as the academies will be considered and is the authority feels that there is any lack on the part of the institution, and then the concerned academy may be scrapped from the probable list and the player not meeting the standards may be disqualified.

As per the reports...

The academies will be divided into three categories and in an attempt to encourage to excellence; there will be an analysis which will provide these academies with opportunity for up gradation. An initiative by the Sports Ministry, the Khelo India Programme was introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation.
