Indian Authorized Ticket Reseller (ATR) for Olympic tickets Fanatic Sports, are allegedly blatantly violating the terms and conditions of reselling Olympic tickets in the country. As per the terms of Tokyo 2020 Olympics, an ATR can impose a maximum of 20% handling charge for the tickets of a particular event at the Olympics. However, Fanatic Sports is seeking way beyond the 20% charge from Indians who wish to visit Tokyo next year and be a part of world's grandest sporting event.

As per Article 22 of the terms and conditions on Tokyo 2020 website, an ATR can charge a maximum of 20% handling charge. An ATR is the NOC or NPC and/or an entity nominated by the NOC or NPC, approved by Tokyo 2020 and the IOC or IPC to promote, sell and distribute Tickets within the designated territory of the relevant NOC or NPC. An ATR may charge a reasonable per-ticket handling charge over and above the face value of the Ticket. For the Tickets of the Olympic Games, this fee may not be more than twenty per cent (20%) of the face value of the Ticket, and in any event may not exceed the capped amount of 6,000 JPY per Ticket. It further states, if any person, regardless of where they reside, believes they are being offered Tickets for purchase on terms that are in violation of the Terms and Conditions, he/she should immediately contact Tokyo 2020.

The Bridge contacted one of the Indian sports fans, who was eagerly waiting for the event but because of the exorbitant price sought by Fanatic Sport is reconsidering his decision. He received quotes from Fanatic Sports, who were asking for upto 80% handling charge plus an additional 18% GST on the entire price, for a total effective mark-up of 112%.

For example, Badminton was charged an 80% handling charge + GST, whereas, boxing is almost 85% + GST, and hockey is lower at 60% + GST.

In the screenshot below, Badminton (TOBDM16 CAT D), which has face value of JPY 8,000, the Indian ATR is charging INR 10,104 which is equivalent to about JPY 14,420. And even on top of this, there is an 18% tax on the entire ticket price of INR 10,104, for a total effective mark-up of 112%. These are the prices of the standalone tickets of the events and which does not comes anymore with the packages that were initially promised.

Besides, there are no prices displayed on the Fanatic Sports website for standalone tickets (without any package or hospitality), they are providing quotes only on phone or e-mail.

Every country or region will have one or two ATRs. The ATRs for USA, Australia and some European countries have listed all prices online and are selling at a mark-up of 20-25% from the face value, as per the terms and conditions of Tokyo 2020. For example, CO Sport, the ATR for USA are selling TOBDM16 Cat D tickets for USD 93.14, which is about INR 6,960, as opposed to INR 10,104 + GST from Fanatic Sports.

The Bridge tried to reach out to authorities of Fanatic Sports, but they refrained to comment on our queries.
