Kabaddi World Cup is an indoor International Kabaddi tournament conducted by the International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) in standard style and is contested by men and women national teams. It started in 2004 with 12 teams which was held in Mumbai, India. It was later held in 2007 and 2016 again in India respectively.

India has a dominant position in the World Cup as it has won all the 3 editions of the event till now. With the advent of Pro Kabaddi League(PKL), the sport has gained worldwide recognition but yet the number of international tournaments are very less. Since the Kabaddi Masters and Asian Games in 2018, the national team has not played a single tournament.

In a recent interview in Ahmadabad, where the final of PKL will take place, the Technical director of International Kabaddi Federation E Prasad Rao has informed that the World Cup will be played in 2020 and the Federation is finalising a slot for the event. He said,"We are finalising a slot for the World Cup that is set to be held next year. There were plans for it to happen in 2019 but they did not materialise. It’s still not decided yet but we want to have the World Cup in 2020." in an exclusive to Scroll.in

Dubai had hosted the Kabaddi Masters last year and was likely to host the Kabaddi World Cup as well, but it did not take place last year. The dates and venue of the World Cup in 2020 are yet to be decided.

E Prasad Rao also spoke about the lobby rule and said that the federation wants to change it in the future. He said to Scroll.in ," We want to change it (lobby rule) and we are experimenting with the outcomes if we alter that rule. We are looking at football and basketball. When the ball goes out, the play is dead. Similarly, when the raider goes out, the play should be dead."

In 2016, the first Women's Kabaddi World Cup was held in India with 16 participant nations. India won the Women's World Cup as well. With so much talent in the country Rao but less opportunities, Rao said, “We had a recent meeting about the development of International Kabaddi and plans for triangular, quadrangular series or Test matches are in the pipeline. It may not be possible for teams from Asia to travel to Europe, so we want to start tournaments between neighbouring countries.”

The International Kabaddi Federation which comprises 33 nations hopes to expand the sport worldwide which would eventually lead its way to the Olympics.
