The All India Junior Ranking Badminton tournament is on in Chandigarh, and the results in the later knockout rounds have been nothing but fantastic. After a disappointing campaign in the prestigious China Open Super 1000 by the Indian contingent, the domestic results by the U19 batch is something that has made Indians sit up and take notice of the future of the sport. All finals will be played today but the one semi-final which grabbed eyeballs yesterday was Nagpur's Malvika Bansod beating Gayathri Gopichand in a nail-biting and high scoring final. Although Bansod won the tie in straight games, the result was anything but simple. The scoreline of 28-26, 21-19 is enough proof of that. The fact that 17-year old Malvika Bansod was given tough competition by 15-year old Gayathri who is fresh from an appearance at the Asian Games and that too in the U19 category is undoubtedly a regaling one. Malvika will be facing Purva Barve for the title. The other standout of the tournament so far has been some players from Manipur who have made it to the finals of the ranking tournament. Four shuttlers from Manipur namely booked Finals berths. Maisnam Meiraba Luwang, the pair of Manjit Khwairakpam and Dingku Konthoujam and Konjengbam Priya (who is paired with Preethi K of Andhra Pradesh) have reached finals of the respective categories which is a moment of pride for the state. While the North Eastern states have successfully made a mark in a myriad of sports through consistent performances by its champions, success in Badminton is not something they are mainly known for. The fact that Manipur has such strong representation in the finals is undoubtedly the fact that they can take heart from. Maisnam Meiraba Luwang reached the finals of the U19 category after edging out his opponent from Telangana to set up the final clash with Kiran George later today. The men's doubles pair of Manjit Khwairakpam and Dingku Konthoujam will be taking on Dhruv Kapila and Krishna Prasad Garaga in the U19 finals. This tournament is one of the two selection tournaments for the World Junior Badminton Championship 2018 as has been announced by the Badminton Association of India.
