On Thursday, World No.4, Youth Olympics champion and Asian Games gold medallist, 17-year-old Saurabh Chaudhary asserted his class once again by bagging the men’s gold medal in 10-metre air pistol at the Intershoot International Championship in Hague, Netherlands.

The Meerut-born youngster shooter scored an impressive 243.3 to finish ahead of Tiago Carapinha of Portugal and Kristian Callaghan of Great Britain. In the qualification stage, Saurabh scored 585 points to qualify for the finals. However, one other Indian, Nikhil Kumar, who eventually finished seventh, had triumphed the young gun to finish on top in the qualification round with a score of 586.

Saurabh, who recently became the youngest person on the 2020 Forbes India 30 U30 list, had started the year on a spectacular note when he won the gold medal at the National Championships last month. Having topped qualification at the nationals with 583, he shot 246.4 in the final to beat Sarabjot Singh by 2.5 points.

One of India's brightest hopes for a medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Saurabh had a terrific season last year in which he claimed two individual and three mixed team golds at ISSF World Cups. He also won a bronze in individuals at the Rio de Janeiro World Cup. With his performances, the teenage shooter earned Indian an Olympic quota and helped the country India finished the year as the top shooting nation in the world, leapfrogging Olympic heavyweights China and the USA.

It is exciting to see that Saurabh has started the year on such a positive note, the win will only boost his confidence ahead of a very crucial six months in the run-up to the Olympics. His next major challenge will be the New Delhi ISSF World Cup, scheduled to be held in March.
