India's no.1 tennis star Yuki Bhambri defeated Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in straight sets to march into the second round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells. Bhambri won the match 7-5, 6-3. Although, it is only a ticket to the second round, for Bhambri it is the first time that he won a match at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. After being down breaks in both sets, it is commendable that Bhambri used all that he had in his arsenal to turn the match around in his favour and did not allow it go into a third set. The match went back and forth for almost two hours before Bhambri sealed the deal. Also read:
Yuki Bhambri: The wait for success continues
Although the junior Australian Open Champion turned the match around and won the match 7-5, 6-3, he lost his serve thrice in the match and was down 1-4, 1-3. Bhambri, while he boasts of being the number one tennis player in India, has little to show for himself, with a career high ranking of 88 and a current ranking of 105. Mahut, on the other hand, is a veteran on the circuit, is 36 years old and has slipped to a ranking of 101, his best being 37. Given his past achievements, with zero titles after a decade on tour, the victory is a noticeable one for Bhambri. He will face ninth seed Lucas Pouille in the second round.
