Indian paddlers dominate on day 1 of Commonwealth Championships
India got a thumping start to their campaign at the 21st Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships in Cuttack. In teams' events, both the men's and women's teams topped their groups to qualify for the Super Eight stage on Wednesday. In the men's event, the trio of Sharath Kamal, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai started by beating Scotland 3-0 and then followed it up with a similar result against Singapore. Similarly, the women's team started by defeating Sri Lanka 3-0, with the help of Manika Batra and Ayhika Mukherjee and Archana Kamath. Later, Madurika Patkar and Sutirtha Mukherjee joined Archana and posted yet another 3-0 victory over South Africa.

Only Sharath lost the opening game against Singapore’s Zheyu Clarence Chew but made a strong comeback to leave his opponent in awe. In the latest development, Uganda and Guyana have obtained their respective government's nod, and they would be sending teams for participation in the individual events. According to a communication to the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) from the two federations, Uganda will send five members while three will come from Guyana, who will compete in singles and doubles events which get underway from July 19 after the team finals.
