India and Pakistan renew their historic rivalry in a high-stakes Pool D encounter at the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 in Amstelveen on Wednesday.
The equation has become clearer for India after England defeated Wales 8-2 earlier in the day. With Wales eliminated from contention for the next round, India need just a draw against Pakistan to secure their place in the second stage.
Pakistan, however, have no such margin for error. The arch-rivals must win to keep their campaign alive and progress from Pool D.
India enter the contest with three points from two matches. They opened with a 3-1 win over Wales before suffering a 2-4 defeat against England despite taking a 2-1 lead into half-time.
Pakistan have collected one point from their opening two games and will need to produce a result against India in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.
India also carry a strong recent record against Pakistan, having remained unbeaten against their arch-rivals across competitions over the past decade.
The clash at the Wagener Hockey Stadium therefore carries enormous stakes, with India's place in the second round and Pakistan's World Cup hopes both on the line.

That is absolutely brilliant from Abhishek. A loose ball inside the circle, thanks to a defensive error and the Indian forward makes Pakistan pay.
He dribbles past four defenders to put the ball into the net. I think, it once again took a deflection off a Pakistan stick but that doesn't matter.
A moment of brilliance from Abhishek and India have scored their fourth!

22' - Pakistan pull one back!
Pakistan come on the attack and Suraj Karkera deflects a ball away for a long corner.
The men in green create a move out of that and Karkera once again kicks the ball away. However, the ball falls to Shahid Hanan, who pounces like a hawk.
Hanan slots the ball past the goalkeeper for his second goal of the tournament.

21' - INDIA SCOREEEE!
An aerial ball, which is received cleanly by Shilanand Lakra, who then pushes it into a defender's foot to earn yet another PC for India.
It is not a direct drag flick this time, as Harmanpreet fails to get a good first touch and instantly pulls the ball back to Rajinder Singh, realising it.
Rajinder takes the shot and it is blocked by the goalkeeper. The rebound somehow finds Harmanpreet Singh again.
The Indian skipper makes no mistake this time and slaps the ball into the net!
It is the third of the evening for India, second for Harman.

Pakistan growing into confidence now as they penetrate the circle, right down the centre. India seem to be under trouble, but Rajinder Singh steps up with a clean interception.

A brief pause in play as the ball deflects into the crowd and hits one of the more than 6000 spectators present in the stand.
The on field umpire spots it and immediately calls for a doctor in the stands. The intervention is quick and we hope it is not too dangerous.

Pakistan suddenly find a counter move, but Jugraj Singh comes up with a good interception to deny.

END OF FIRST QUARTER!
The hooter sounds and that's the end of the first quarter. That was easily India's 15 minutes. They dominated right from the start, pressing forward with ease.
The Pakistan midfield was guilty of giving away way too many turnovers, which meant that they never really created any threatening chances of their own. Suraj Karkera, the Indian goalie, was called to action just once.
India made the most of it, scoring twice. But they would feel, they should have scored more, having missed a couple of penalty corners.

Harmanpreet Singh messes up the drag this time around as the ball rolls away. An easy clearance for Pakistan.
But India feel it hit the defender's foot. Manpreet Singh is asking for a review, but the umpire shuts him down.
"You can't review that," the umpire instructs.
