Please keep reloading the page to get regular updates. In case you missed it, here is schedule for India for the rest of the tournament. India will play defending champions England tomorrow. FULL-TIME: Argentina 3-2 India 3 for Peillat and 2 for Rohidas. Talwinder Singh shot a wide ball in the final minute which would have been a miracle had it been converted. Not the start India would have liked but they should take it as a learning experience and improve the next match. 58' The game is being played in the Argentine half now. Desperate attempts at an attacking end for India but a lot of misses too. Ramandeep does poorly to miss a pass inside the circle.
57'
46 fouls by India so far in this game. Maybe that's the inexperience showing here. On the other hand, keeping that in mind, they have consistently improved throughout the game. 56' 5 shots on target for Argentina so far. India go through a quick change in tactics and start pushing forward more. A yellow card for Sumit. India down to 10 men for the rest of the game. 54' Good interception by Sumit from Lopez but the decision ultimately goes against him. Long corner for Argentina. 52' The controlled game of hockey by Argentina continues. India have a little over 8 minutes to find a gap and score.
And we're back. Saty tuned for updates as the final 10 minutes play out.
49' Lightning suspends play with 11 minutes left in the final quarter. 48' A slower third quarter has slowed down even more. Argentina get another Penalty quarter courtesy Lucas Vila. Peillat takes it again but fails to convert. Argentina still maintain a 1 goal lead. (3-2) Here is how India has fared against Argentina in the past but a word for the current team up against a relatively experienced Argentine squad. So far, they have held their ground with players like Mandeep and Nilam particularly impressing. Rain descends on the match now. Let's see how that affects the final quarter.
45' END OF THIRD QUARTER. Argentina 3-2 India. 44' Penalty corners have so far been quite integral to the game. A quarter left to go. India needs to find a weak spot in the Argentine defensive wall soon. A very good rundown by Sk Utthappa seemed to give some hope for India but it ends in a long corner. 43' A very, very controlled game of Hockey by the Argentine side. Sardara Singh back in action after a green card forced him out of play for 2 minutes. 42' Simranjeet Singh with a wonderful run into the box, goes past three players, but can't keep his balance . 6 minutes left in this quarter. The Argentines playing clever Hockey here. A more defensive strategy by them is being played out.
41'
10 Circle entries for Argentina so far with 5 of them coming from the left side. That's where the defenders need to focus on. Argentina still lead 3-2. 38' A game which started with a hot and humid atmosphere has now turned into one dominated by dark clouds. The last thing this game needs is a downpour. 37' Ramandeep continues to rally the midfield looking for an opening. The passing game between youngsters like Surender and Talwinder is absolutely on point. 34' GOAL India's lead does not last long. Krishan Pathak was substituted by Suraj Karkera in the half time and a low hit by Gonzalo Peillat gets Argentina back in the lead. Early days still. India are far from being down and out.
32' GOAL
: An injection by Ramandeep and India are back in the game and raring to go. Juanma Vivaldi, who was excellent in the first quarter was successfully beated. Brilliant by Amit Rohidas A penalty corner for Sumit Kumar's efforts and AMIT ROHIDAS DOES IT!!! 2-2 for India! 30' HALF TIME. What a half of Hockey. The game is precariously poised and can go either way right now. Come on India! https://twitter.com/hockeyind/status/969858097052205057 Playing a young squad is completely utilising the Azlan Shah experience. One actually marvels at how Marijne is thinking long term about the rest of 2018. It is quite possible that stand out players from this team will have a significant role to play in the tournaments going forward. https://twitter.com/mihirsv/status/969856630925025280
26' GOAL
Amit Rohidas makes the third Penalty corner count. India still down by a goal but a one goal deficit is practically nothing. *Stat* : Olympic 2016 champions Argentina rode on a penalty corner strike by Gonzalo Peillat to defeat India 1-0 in the semi-finals of the Hockey World League Final at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. 25' Penalty Corner First penalty corner for India. A chance to cut Argentina's lead in half but the Argentine goalkeeper has been brilliant. 24' GOAL Unbelievable here from Gonzalo Peillat. A brilliant drag flick taken in a penalty corner and Krishan Pathak is defeated for the second time. Argentina lead 2-0.
22'
India finished 3rd in 2017. Surely we will be aiming for something better than a Bronze finish at the tournament this time. It will be fantastic motivation for the relatively young team if that happens. 19' Argentina has started the second half better, India are trying to sit back and counter. 11 minutes left in the second quarter. Not going to argue with that. He has denied India three chances now. https://twitter.com/hockeyind/status/969853216547467264 22-year old goalkeeper Krishan Pathak making his 9th appearance for India should not beat himself up over the goal. If India carry on with the impressive display, they may close the one goal deficit soon. On to the second quarter.
15' END OF 1st QUARTER
India have clearly been the better team here but one good shot gets Argentina the lead. Tough luck. 14' GOAL A good block by India in the penalty corner taken by Argentina but Peillat gets the first break for Argentina after. A very strong flick and the ball flies past the goalkeeper. Very cleverly played. Argentina lead 1-0 13' Three shots on target for India and Ibara has won Argentina a penalty corner. Will they get the first break? Let's hope not. Argentina have appealed for a penalty corner inside the Indian box. A referral is in order. 60-40 possession in favour of India with 4 circle entries compared to 2 by Argentina. Less than 5 minutes left in Q1 and it has been quite evenly matched so far. Things are yet to take a competitive turn. So far, youngster Nilam Sanjeep Xess has stood out quite wonderfully. The Kalinga Lancers player has proved clinical for the team going forward. The thing about this team is the amount of agility and dedication the youngsters bring to the fray. Take Nilam Sanjeep Xess . The captain of the Gold medal winning U18 Asia Cup team is off to a great start.
5'
Sumit Kumar, the debutant makes a wonderful run down the right, tries to chip Juan Vivaldi, bu the Argentina goalkeeper makes a very good save. 2' Been a cagey first couple o fminutes, with both teams have flooded the midfield. India has had most of the ball as Sardar looks to control the midfield. So the pre-match rituals are done. Argentina are playing in sky blue, and the Indian team in spotless whites. Tell you what, the national anthem pumped me up, hope it had the same effect on the players. COME ON! Okay, the wait is over. The teams are on the pitch, India is fielding an extremely young team. This should be exciting.

India vs Argentina Preview

The first major Hockey series of the year is set to begin shortly and the Indian Men's Hockey team opens with a cracker of a game. They will be taking on reigning Olympic champions Argentina in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup at roughly 13.30 Indian Standard time. While Indian Hockey has been on a roll lately, it is worth looking back at their most recent performance in a World Level tournament. The last time India met Argentina at the Hockey World League finals in Bhubaneshwar, the Men in Blue put up a stellar performance to knock the latter out of the tournament. However, the Indian squad is depleted for the tournament. Prodigal captain Manpreet Singh has been rested thus considerably weakening India's attack. In his absence, veteran Sardara Singh will be taking charge of the team. The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup mars the return of the Hockey legend and he will be looking to make a strong statement in the comeback. There are key names which are missing from the Indian squad. The likes of Akashdeep Singh, SV Sunil, Mandeep Singh in the forward line, Manpreet Singh in the midfield, goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and two vital defenders Rupinder Pal Singh and Harmanpreet Singh. Like Sjoerd Marijne has always done since taking up the coaching job of the Indian Men's team, the line up consists of an interesting mix of youngsters and veterans. Names like Nilam Sanjeep Xess and Suraj Karkera have found their way into the team and after a convincing performance at the Hockey World League, they seem to have earned the trust of their coach enough to make a place for themselves. 2018 is an important year for Indian Hockey and the morale for the rest of the year is sure to depend on the outcome of the tournament. Let's hope India is successful in riding on this wave of success and are able to produce a better finish than the Hockey World League.
