Ashok Kumar, the former Indian hockey international, underwent an angioplasty at a hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The 74-year old hockey legend was hospitalized on Sunday and subsequently suffered a heart attack.

As per reports, the Kumar is now in stable condition.

Stents implanted

Speaking to PTI, a source from Kumar's family stated that the medical procedure was successful.

“He (Ashok Kumar) underwent a successful angioplasty at the Escorts Hospital. The doctors implanted a few stents after they found a few blockages in his artery."

Kumar is reportedly ‘out of danger’ and in ‘stable condition’.

According to the family, the hockey legend is ‘under observation’ and expected to be ‘discharged from the hospital in 2-3 days.’

A hockey legend

Ashok Kumar is the son of the Indian hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand.

He was a member of the Indian team that won the 1975 World Cup under Ajit Pal Singh and was renowned for his ball control when playing on the inside-right.

He was also a member of the Indian side that won a bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Additionally, he has three World Cup medals in his cabinet – a bronze from the 1971 Barcelona event, Silver from 1973 in Amsterdam and Gold from 1975 in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier this year, the 74-year-old was awarded the Hockey India Major Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award.
