Australian tactician Graham Reid is likely to take charge of the Indian men’s hockey team as per reports floating around. Apparently, Hockey India (HI) has zeroed in on the particular name along with the consultation of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Tuesday. The top officials of both the organisation collectively took the decision in New Delhi, while the official appointment may be done within a couple of days. The 54-year old Aussie has agreed to the terms and conditions of SAI’s contract with his monthly salary ranging between $12000 to $15000. India’s former coach Roelant Oltmans was getting $15000 per month as per his contract. The final announcement on the new coach would be made only after the ministry puts its final stamp of approval on Reid’s name this week.
Reid has previously acted as a manager of the Australian men’s hockey team for a couple of years from 2014. He quit the job after Australia failed to get past the quarter-final stage at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
If Reid is appointed as the coach, it will be all-Australian coaches and support staff for the Indian men’s hockey team. The current interim coach of the team and HI’s High-Performance director is David Ian John, an Australian while the team’s physio is also from the same country. Graham was a successful player during his days, having won the silver medal with the national team at the 1992 Olympics and a bronze medal at the 1990 World Cup. Having faired fairly well during his managerial career, he was recently sacked by his former employers Amsterdam Hockey Club (AHC) from the post of the head coach after the team’s humiliating 2-8 loss to HGC in a league fixture last weekend. Previously, he led Australian men’s team to two Champions Trophy titles and also the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medal.
