The Indian men’s hockey team is currently competing at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, which is being co-hosted in Wavre, Belgium, and Amstelveen, Netherlands.
India reached Phase 2 after finishing second in their group. They began with a 3-1 win over Wales, followed by a 2-4 defeat to England. India then bounced back with a 5-3 win over arch-rivals Pakistan to book their place in Phase 2.
India are now in Pool E in Phase 2 alongside the Netherlands, Argentina and England. India began the second round with a 1-3 defeat to the Netherlands. The loss has made their path to the semi-finals more difficult, but their chances are still alive.
With the remaining results now becoming crucial, India need to win their next match against Argentina and then hope for the right result in the Netherlands versus England match.
To qualify for the semi-finals, India have three possible scenarios. In all three, India first need to beat Argentina and aim to score as many goals as possible. At the same time, they will hope the Netherlands can beat England today.
- If India beat Argentina by 2 goals
If India beat Argentina by two goals, the Netherlands will need to beat England by three goals for India to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
- If India beat Argentina by 3 goals
If India beat Argentina by three goals, the Netherlands will need to beat England by two goals.
- If India beat Argentina by 4 goals
If India beat Argentina by four goals, the Netherlands will need to beat England by one goal.
The bigger India’s winning margin against Argentina, the smaller the margin the Netherlands will need against England.
India’s defeat to the Netherlands has reduced their room for error, but the semi-final door is still open. The team now needs to focus on getting the required result against Argentina while keeping an eye on the Netherlands-England game.
The margin of victory will be just as important as the result itself. For India, the equation is clear: beat Argentina by the required margin and hope the Netherlands defeat England by the corresponding margin. If those results go India’s way, the men’s team can still make it to the Hockey World Cup semi-finals.
