The country’s top sporting personalities, former hockey player Sandeep Singh and wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt and Babita Phogat contested on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tickets for the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections. They may have garnered an array of wrestling accolades in the past, but the charisma seems to lose sight in the political spectrum. Out of the three, Sandeep Singh won a seat from the Pehowa constituency by as many as 5,313 votes.

Yogeshwar has lost from his constituency against Sri Krishnan Hooda of Congress. Yogeshwar’s loss in the Baroda constituency is the first upset for BJP in the Haryana Assembly elections. It is no good news for Babita either, as she has lost the Dadri constituency. Interestingly, both wrestlers contested from constituencies that BJP has never won previously. Besides, Sandeep Singh too was fighting for a seat in which the party has failed to secure a ticket before.

Though it might seem strange, wrestling and the murky domain of politics aren’t a million miles away from each other. That perhaps so well justifies the reason behind sportspeople turning their sights on politics. For the 36-year-old Yogeshwar, politics remains to be an area that enables one to remove loopholes from the system. Babita has always looked upon politics as an opportunity to do something for the country. All the Olympians were required to resign from their respective state government jobs before joining the BJP.
