Gora Ho- does the name strike a bell? Probably not. Gora Ho is India's next big thing in archery and he just won gold, partnering Akash and Gaurav Lambe in the team recurve event at the Asia Cup Archery Stage 1. The trio beat Mongolia's Adiyasuren Baasankhuu, Otgonbold Baatarkhuyag and Gantugs Jantsan 27-26 in the tie-breaker to clinch India's third gold. Thankfully, unlike many child prodigies, Gora has been spotted well in time. His unique deftness with a bow and arrow has earned him more than a 100 medals in sub-junior and junior events at the state and national levels and is known as the Golden Boy. His talent in the sport was spotted early on by the
state who financially supported him in terms of acquiring quality equipment
so that at least career-wise his woes are lessened. After all, not much can be done for him otherwise. His father has been paralysed in bed for the last two years and his mother is no more. Ho grows up in the care of his older brothers. The only way for him to rise out of his poverty is by striking gold, and he is not doing such a bad job of it right now. His talent with the bow and arrow was spotted six years back by coaches at the Dugni Archery Academy in Seraikela. Before that he trained at the Arjuna Archery Academy in Kharswan where he was spotted by Srinivas Rao, who took on the onus to shift him to Dugni. Only 17, he has managed to amaze and astonish and has big dreams for himself- Tokyo 2020. But given his consistently brilliant performance, no one thinks an Olympic dream is too big a dream for this tribal boy. He turned heads at the tender age of 13 where he won medals galore at the Jharkhand Archery Championships and received the National Child Award. The fruitful campaign in Bangkok has raised the level of his confidence bar considerable but success has not gone into his head. He is already preparing for his next big trial, i.e. for the trials to be part of India's team for the upcoming World Cup championship in Shanghai in April. Keeping an eye out for Gora Ho could possibly mean witnessing history being written. __________________________________________ Also read: From practicing with wooden sticks, 17-year old javelin thrower Vikas Yadav eyes Youth Olympic spot
