Ivan Vukomanovic’s potential return to Kerala Blasters has been a hot topic among fans and analysts.
The Serbian tactician, who played a crucial role in reshaping the club’s fortunes in the Indian Super League (ISL), remains one of the most successful coaches in Blasters’ history.
His tenure saw Kerala Blasters reach new heights, and now, speculation is rife about whether he could make a comeback.
When recently asked about a possible return, Vukomanovic left the door open, saying:
"You never know. In football, anything's possible, you know. There are many possibilities. Football, so you never know. It depends on momentum. I think that we should let them finish the season and calm down for a bit. Then later, we'll see. You never know," he told Media One.
Under Vukomanovic, Kerala Blasters enjoyed one of their most successful periods. His arrival in the 2021/22 season transformed the team, guiding them to the ISL final for the first time since 2016.
While they fell short against Hyderabad FC in a dramatic penalty shootout, it was a turning point for the club, as Kerala Blasters made back-to-back playoff appearances in 2022/23 and 2023/24—an unprecedented achievement in the club's history.
Post-Vukomanovic struggles
Following his departure, the club appointed Mikael Stahre, but his tenure proved disappointing, with Blasters managing just 11 points from 12 matches, leading to his dismissal.
Interim coach Tomasz Tchorz took over and secured 13 points in nine games, but the team missed out on the playoffs.
Despite the speculation surrounding Vukomanovic’s return, Kerala Blasters’ primary target remains Odisha FC head coach Sergio Lobera. The Spanish tactician, known for his attacking philosophy and success in Indian football, is at the top of the club's wishlist.
Lobera, who previously led FC Goa and Mumbai City FC to silverware, has a strong track record in Indian football.
His ability to build winning teams makes him an attractive option for the Blasters' management as they look to rebuild after a turbulent season.
