From playing with a pomelo to the National team: The journey of Thoiba Singh

Thoiba Singh’s footballing journey began in the fields of Manipur, where he used to play with a pomelo because his family couldn’t afford a proper football.

Despite these humble beginnings, his determination and talent have carried him to an incredible milestone—earning his first call-up for the Indian national team.

Recalling the moment, Thoiba shared, “After the Mohun Bagan match, we were having dinner when I got a call from Ravi Khedar, the General Manager of Odisha FC. He asked me, ‘Are you going home?’ I said, ‘Yes, tomorrow morning.’ He then told me, ‘Don’t go home; you are going for the national camp.’ For a moment, I was silent and shocked. I still can’t believe it.”

The next morning brought a flood of congratulatory messages from his coach, coaching staff, and teammates.

For Thoiba, this moment fulfilled a dream he had nurtured since childhood. “Playing for the national team was my dream, and now it’s coming true. But this is just the start. There’s still a long way to go, and I’m excited to work hard and give my best,” he said.

Joining the national camp has brought Thoiba into the company of Indian football stalwarts like Rahul Bheke and Sandesh Jhingan. “It’s a privilege to train alongside players like Rahul bhai and Sandesh bhai. They are great players and wonderful people. I am ready to learn from them on and off the pitch. My job is to give my best in training and prove myself; the coach’s decision will determine the rest. Even if I don’t make my debut now, I’ll keep working hard.”

Thoiba’s path has been marked by perseverance. He started his formal football journey at the AMOFA Academy, representing his district and state teams before earning a spot in the U-15 national camp. Although he was ruled out of the final squad, he didn’t let the setback deter him.

His time at Minerva Academy brought multiple U-15 and U-18 I-League titles, setting the stage for his professional career at Odisha FC.

Thoiba’s family has been a pillar of support throughout his journey. “My father was also an athlete, and my family has always stood by me. Without their love and support, I wouldn’t be here today,” he said.

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. In his debut Indian Super League season (2020-2021), Thoiba suffered an injury in the first match, ruling him out for the entire season. But he returned stronger, overcoming the setback with grit and resilience.
