Ex-Mohun Bagan defender Satyajit Ghosh, who once formed a formidable central defensive partnership with club legend Subrata Bhattacharjee, passed away due to a heart attack on Monday morning. He was 62, and is survived by his wife, daughter and son-in-law.

A champion defender in his own right, Ghosh joined the Kolkata giants from Railway FC towards the end of 1981. He played for them till 1986 before coming back for a second spell in 1988 after a short stint at Mohammedan Sporting. He was known for his composure and ability to inspire others with his own commitment towards the team. Although Ghosh was considered to be an extremely good tackler and header of the ball, his career was plagued with injuries which forced him into retiring well before his time. He also played for India in the Nehru Cup in 1985 under the coaching of Ceric Milovan.

ATK Mohun Bagan paid tribute to the former defender using the club’s twitter handle with a message and a picture of him from his time at the club. A number of former colleagues including Subrata Bhattacharjee and Tanumoy Ghosh, have also expressed their grief since hearing about the news of his demise. Ghosh was in his native Debanandapur in the Hooghly district of West Bengal when he breathed his last. His body was taken to the District Sports Association office for everyone to pay their final respects before the last rites were completed in nearby Chinsurah.
