Forward Lynda Kom delivered a standout performance with two crucial goals in Odisha FC's 4-1 victory over Singapore’s Lion City Sailors during their AFC Women’s Champions League debut.
At just 19 years old, Lynda’s contributions are already making waves on an international stage.
Following the match, Lynda reflected on the game, the significance of the tournament, and her journey so far in an exclusive interview with The Bridge.
"I scored two goals in the last match, and I am very happy," Lynda shared, her enthusiasm palpable.
"We had practiced diligently for this moment, especially since Odisha FC was participating in the AFC for the first time. Those goals were vital for our team, and they came from applying everything our coach had taught us. I’d like to thank everyone because this goal was truly a team effort. Our coach is also very happy with the result," she said.
For Lynda, the AFC Women’s Champions League is more than just a competition; it’s a significant milestone in her burgeoning career. Hailing from Khoirentak Khunou in Manipur, Lynda’s journey from playing football with local boys to representing Odisha FC and India is nothing short of inspiring.
"This is a very big tournament for us," she explained. "Playing against another country and a major club has been an eye-opening experience. We’ve learned a lot, especially tactically. There’s a notable difference between playing domestically in India and competing on an international stage. Our team has gained invaluable insights and grown considerably."
The golden girl
Lynda’s rise to prominence has been marked by impressive performances at various levels.
From scoring six goals and winning the Golden Boot at the 2019 Under-17 World Cup to being named the Most Valuable Player at the SAFF U-18 Women's Championship, Lynda has consistently showcased her talent.
"Our team is strong mentally, and our coordination is excellent," she said. "We support one another and play as a family. We have a lot of experienced players like Shreya di, Pyaari di, and others. Everyone applies what we practice, and even if someone makes a mistake, we back each other up and stay positive."
Reflecting on her role and the team’s approach, Lynda emphasized the importance of enjoying the game and staying adaptable.
"Our coach always says to enjoy playing and not to feel pressured," she shared. "Whether it’s scoring a goal or making an assist, I play according to the situation and what the team needs. Those three points are crucial for us, and we’re focused on continuing our success."
With Odisha FC set to face Etihad Club in their next fixture, Lynda’s standout performance and the team’s unity will be pivotal.
As she continues to shine on the international stage, Lynda’s journey—from Manipur to the AFC Women’s Champions League—serves as a testament to her talent, dedication, and the bright future ahead.
