Khelo India, since its inception has been a major success, promoting sports and awareness in a bid to improve India’s sporting landscape. Launched on January 31, 2018, the Khelo India Games (KIG) aims to cultivate the nation’s bountiful talent and act as a springboard to propel them to a global platform.

Now, on the roadmap to expand the horizon of KIG, the union government has decided to launch a dedicated all-girls league to encourage them to join sports at the grassroot level and consequently groom them to excel in their respective disciplines.

Named as the 'Khelo India Girls League' (KIGL), the first to get off the blocks will be the 'Khelo India Girls Football League’. It will be held under the aegis of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) while the technical and organisational support will be extended by the All India Football Federation.

The initiative comes as an effort to create a buzz for the U-17 women's football World Cup, which is slated to be held in India next year. All the proposed leagues will be organised in association with national sports federations (NSFs) and respective state governments.

Speaking about the idea of hosting an exclusive league for girls, World champion PV Sindhu opined it is a need of the hour according to TOI.

”I truly support Khelo India's initiative along with AIFF to have a U-17 football league for girls. Girls across age groups should take up all kinds of sports even if it's for fun as it helps us to be a fitter nation."

While the dates and venues for the football league are yet to be announced by the government, it’s expected to run close to the upcoming edition of the Khelo India Youth Games which is scheduled from January 10-22 next year in Guwahati.
