Up and coming Indian midfielder SK Sahil has signed a long term contract with Indian Super League (ISL) franchise ATK Mohun Bagan FC that will keep him at the club until 2023, the club announced on Monday.

Sahil, a product of the Mohun Bagan academy, impressed in the I-League last season for the Green and Maroons under Kibu Vicuna. The 19-year-old cemented his place in the midfield and played an integral role in Bagan’s title triumph.

However, with Bagan merging with ATK FC to obtain an entry into the ISL ahead of the season, there were doubts as to where Sahil would play. Vicuna, who had joined Kerala Blasters in the meanwhile, wanted him at Kochi and as per reports, Kolkata giants East Bengal also wanted to lure him away.

ATK Mohun Bagan, on their part, were always keen on keeping hold of the talented teenager. Finally, after weeks of speculation, they managed to secure Sahil and tie him down with a three-year deal.

“It is an honour to be given the opportunity to represent my boyhood club and Kolkata in India’s top football competition. I am very excited to play for ATK Mohun Bagan FC,” Sahil said after signing the contract.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Sahil gets much of an opportunity in the ISL. Antonio Lopes Habas’ squad is filled with superstars and it will be tough for any youngster to make a breakthrough. However, Sumit Rathi’s rise to prominence last season is a testament to the fact that Habas is not afraid to give his young players game time, and that should encourage Sahil.
