Indian Super League (ISL) outfit Hyderabad FC have completed the signing of Australian winger Joel Chianese, who has been playing for A-League side Perth Glory FC since 2016.
It is understood that while the club and the player had an agreement from before, a sort of pre-contract being agreed, Chianese was waiting to see how the coronavirus situation pans out in India before putting pen to paper. The Bridge can confirm that the signing has now been completed and the 30-year-old will be seen in Hyderabad colours in the upcoming season of the ISL.
Chianese started his career at Blacktown City in 2009 before moving to Sydney FC in 2011. Since then, he has been playing in the A-League for a number of clubs. So far, he has played 119 league matches for various teams, scoring 21 goals and making 11 assists. Last season, he scored 4 times and made 3 assists in 22 appearances.
The right winger was consigned to the Sydney FC scrapheap for some time, but when he moved to Perth Glory, he started gaining prominence. In fact, he was a vital part of the team that won the A-League premiership in the 2018-19 campaign. However, his contract was running out at the end of the 2020 season, and the ISL emerged as a likely destination.
Hyderabad, after a disappointing start to life, has been rebuilding ahead of the new season. The club released 10 players, including Robin Singh and Kamaljit Singh, during the transfer window.
Coach Albert Roca wants to make some shrewd signings and challenge for a place in the top-4 and it appears that Chianese, who also fulfills the mandatory Asian quota in the squad, could be the first foreign signing of many. The club has already announced the signings of goalkeeper Subrata Paul and winger Halicharan Narzary and more announcements are expected to follow.
