East Bengal FC defender Hijazi Maher has been ruled out for the remainder of the ISL season due to a knee injury, the club confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

“After evaluating Hijazi’s medical reports, we can confirm that the defender will miss the remainder of the season due to a knee injury,” said the club statement.

The defender suffered the injury during a practice session ahead of East Bengal's match against Mumbai City FC in December 2024.

Having been bought by East Bengal in the summer transfer window, Maher has made 13 appearances so far, scoring two goals for the club, against Punjab FC and Kerala Blasters FC.

Despite Maher's acquisition and other reinforcements at the back, East Bengal got off to a horrendous start to the 2024-25 ISL season, losing six of their opening seven matches.

They have had better fortunes since the signing of head coach Oscar Burzon, who took charge after EBFC's horrible start and has since steadied the ship.

East Bengal, however, still sit at 10th in the points table, having won just five of their 18 matches this season so far, accumulating 18 points.

They play 11th place Chennaiyin FC next at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on 8th February.
