ISL: Jordan Murray's curler and the top goals from matchweek one
The 11th edition of the ISL is up and running with 17 goals in the opening matchweek.
Matchweek one of the 2024-25 ISL season has come and gone, and the opening set of games have provided fans with some truly delightful moments.
A total of 17 goals have been scored by 12 teams across six matches.
From simple tap-ins to long rangers, the first week had it all.
And just before we move in to the second matchweek, here are the top five goals from the week gone by.
#5: Farukh Choudhary, Chennaiyin FC
Chennaiyin FC began their ISL season with a stunning come from behind victory against Odisha FC, at the Kalinga Stadium.
Trailing by a goal and coming into the second half, the Marina Machans' captain Connor Shields received the ball in the left flank and dribbled past the entire Odisha defense before pulling it back for Farukh who slotted it home for the equalizer.
Although the goal was scored by debutant Farukh, it was indeed Connor who created the goal out of nothing with sheer brilliance.
#4: Vinith Venkatesh, Bengaluru FC
Vinith Venkatesh had a dream debut when he faced East Bengal FC in Bengaluru's opening fixture at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
Receiving a pass from Edgar Mendez on the edge of the box, Vinith unleashed a rocket of a shot into the bottom corner to send the crowd into delirium.
What makes this goal even more special is the fact that Vinith joined Bengaluru FC 11 years back, at the age of eight, and has been with them ever since. And now, he just repaid the team's faith in him with a memorable goal on debut.
Stuff of dreams!
#3: Jesus Jiminez, Kerala Blasters
The match between Kerala Blasters and Punjab FC, arguably the match of the week, went from cagey to crazy in the final minutes, with three goals scored by both teams in the space of 10 minutes.
After Luka Majcen of Punjab gave the lead from the penalty spot, Jesus Jiminez, making his debut, in the 92nd minute, equalized brilliantly thanks to a superb header off Pritham's inviting cross.
Pritam Joel's cross was a thing of beauty.
He curled it from the right half-space onto Jiminez's head, a superb piece of football.
Jiminez's technique, power, and accuracy were on point, and the outcome was a goal that even Cristiano Ronaldo would be proud of.
#2: Daniel Chima Chukwu, Chennaiyin FC
Another debutant features on this list and this time, it is a Chennaiyin FC player again, the Nigerian forward Daniel Chima Chukwu.
After Chennaiyin completed the comeback by scoring two goals in three minutes to go 2-1 up against the Gaurs, it was Chima's goal that sealed the three points. The goal itself was not an ordinary one by any means.
Picking up the loose ball from Laldinliana's deflected cross, Chima, with his back to goal, struck a beautiful half-volley into the bottom corner.
It proved to be a crucial goal to help the squad keep its nose in front as Odisha did pull one back late in the game.
#1: Jordan Murray, Jamshedpur FC
The goal of matchweek one goes to Jordan Murray of Jamshedpur FC and there was very little debate here.
With the score tied at 1-1, and barely any time left, Jordan picked up a long ball on the left side, cut inside, and hit a powerful curler onto the near post, completely deceiving the FC Goa goalkeeper. And needless to say, the ball ricocheted into the net from the post.
Thanks to his goal, Jamshedpur FC went back home with all three points, and it was a goal worth watching on loop!
